Father’s day was first celebrated on July 5, 1908 in West Virginia by Grace Golden Clayton who had just lost her father, but other more famous events such as Independence Day on July the 4th overshadowed the day. Hence it did not get famous until 1910, when it was held in Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Dodd was raised by her single father along with her 5 siblings. And after hearing about Mother’s day being celebrated in 1909, she told her pastor that father’s should have a similar day to honor them. She initially wanted to celebrate Father’s day on June the 5th, however as the pastor did not have enough time to prepare for it, Father’s day was moved to the 3rd Sunday of June. Father’s day was made an official national holiday in America in 1972 and the 3rd Sunday of June is currently the official Father’s Day for 77 countries.
